What is FDM 3D Printing?

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is an industrial 3D printing process that is ideal for manufacturing low-volume parts or prototypes. In FDM, wire-fed stock material is heated and extruded to build geometry layer-by-layer.

FDM machines can produce affordable plastic parts in commonly used materials from processes such as injection moulding, blow moulding, etc. These are no limited and include; ABS, ASA, PLA, PETG, PEEK, PEI / ULTEM, etc.

BENEFITS

LOW-COST

Well-suited for large production runs, without effecting quality

MATERIALS

Wide selection of materials suitable for any application including woods and metals co-polymers

READY TO USE

FDM requires limited post-processing, most parts are ready to use straight from the machine

UV STABLE

Some FDM materials are UV stable and are suitable for most outdoor applications long-term

Advantages and drawbacks of FDM 3D printing

Advantages

  • FDM is the most cost-effective way to produce custom thermoplastic parts and prototypes.
  • Lead times are short (typically a few days).
  • A wide range of materials is available, suitable for prototyping and industrial applications
3D Printed Screw Holes

Drawbacks

  • FDM is not suitable for parts with very small details due to its low resolution.
  • Parts are likely to have visible layer lines, so post-processing is required for a smooth finish.
  • The layer adhesion mechanism makes parts inherently anisotropic (not recommended for end-use).

FDM 3D Printing - Frequently Asked Questions

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) builds upon pre-determined geometry through wire fed plastic feed stock.

FDM is well-suited for basic proof-of-concept models and simple prototyping.

Parts with overhangs greater than 45 degrees will require support material. Our technicians will assess your parts and add this in automatically when programming your order.

We have a choice of Black, Grey and White colours for most materials, with some colour options available upon request. We also offer media blasting and professional spray painting services.

All of our FDM materials can be hand finished apart from TPU.

No – due to the cavities and porous surfaces, FDM printing isn’t recommended for any food-contact applications due to the high risk of bacteria growth.

You can specify when placing our order your desired orientation using our order messaging system, otherwise our technical team will automatically orientate your part for you.

To reduce your part costs there are a number of options available; reduce the quality, reduce the infill, scale down the part and reduce the part thickness.
